HISTORICAL NOTES ON THE CHURCH AND THE VILLAGE

The parish church of San Cristoforo in Pian di Marte is located on the northern hills of Lake Trasimeno, in Central Italy, in a geographical context that is almost Tuscany but also almost Umbria, a sure offshoot of the Val di Chiana.

The site, called Il Poggio (formerly Colle Sant’Angelo), is located in the locality now called Pian di Marte, in the territory of Castel Rigone in the municipality of Passignano sul Trasimeno.

The first mention of the plebs of St. Christophorus in written documentation dates back to 1136 when, on December 13, it was confirmed to the episcopate of Perugia by Pope Innocenzo II; in 1163 it is found in the diploma with which Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa granted protection to the Bishop of Perugia and the churches under his jurisdiction.

In 1565 there is news of the existence of the baptismal font, of which, however, the date of erection is unknown.

The exact location of the original parish church remains unknown, but the intention to move it a short distance away, to the top of the healthier hill, is documented in 1628, where it was actually rebuilt a century later by Don Giacomo Buitoni from San Sepolcro, parish priest of the time, who left evidence of it in a manuscript.

In 2011, the Municipality identified the Poggio architectural complex as one of the testimonial places of its territory, establishing it as a Minor Historic Center. Over time, the complex has also captured the interest of historians such as the academic Giovanni Brizzi of the University of Bologna, of writers such as Paolo Rumiz in the newspaper La Repubblica and in the book Annibale, and finally of the director Alessandro Scillitani in the movie “Ritorno sui monti naviganti”. Photographers such as Aldo Palazzolo, Monika Bulaj, Maurizio Montagna, Filippo Belletti and Ezio Ratti have portrayed and loved the place.

The Borgo is a spacious architectural complex that has grown over the centuries, including the church, the parish house, large living areas, stables and sheds for various production activities, including tobacco drying.

After the structural and architectural restoration that took place in the first decade of this century, the process of valorising the Pieve was started in 2016 (a specific television report made by Rai Tre TGR Umbria on 2 April of the same year), with a planning phase agreed with the Soprintendenza Archeologia Belle Arti e Paesaggio di Perugia, which led to the aesthetic and functional recovery of the building and the church, with particular attention to the criteria of universal accessibility.
